One of the many services that we offer here at PressBoost is conversion of fixed speed booster units to variable speed. When converting a fixed speed booster to variable speed the energy savings are considerable (approx. 30-50{546ee268ce7713d2b6d4f6ff974fadd45b4c551b6f43a7e80340ad9a7da26c27} per annum), therefore, the cost of conversion can be recovered very quickly and the savings going forward are substantial. The savings vary depending on the number and size of pumps, building demand and occupancy, we can calculate an estimate of savings for you based on the kilowatt rating of the pumps if required.

In conjunction with ABB we have developed a range of variable speed control panels that can be retrofitted to all makes and types of existing fixed and variable speed booster units, irrespective of the number of pumps. This particular job was a 4 pump unit, therefore, the savings will be considerable. All 4 pumps are in full working order, therefore, it is considerably more cost effective to simply replace the panel than replace the entire unit. The major issue with this unit was the constant maintenance required to the analogue controls due to the banging in and out of the pump contactors,  caused by the high demand of the building and the unit being fixed speed, this is something which will not be an issue with variable speed.

Fixed speed pumps once activated run at 100{546ee268ce7713d2b6d4f6ff974fadd45b4c551b6f43a7e80340ad9a7da26c27} capacity and then once demand is satisfied switch to run on timer, in order to limit the number of stops and starts an hour. Variable speed control will bring pumps in at a significantly reduced speed as and when demand requires, this will then ramp up and down as necessary to maintain an extremely tight pressure differential, thus giving much smoother water pressure delivery and removing the need for a pressure/flow regulation, thus extremely high energy savings can be attained typically 40-50{546ee268ce7713d2b6d4f6ff974fadd45b4c551b6f43a7e80340ad9a7da26c27}.
